Car hire prices in Cyprus
Use the country-wide starting price as a reference, rather than a quote for every location or date. Set your own pick-up place and rental dates before choosing a car.
A low daily rate does not settle the whole bill. The rental total can grow with a delivery charge, an additional driver, a child seat or a different return location. Keep the same dates when comparing offers.
Where to collect a car: Larnaca, Paphos or Limassol
Larnaca, Paphos and Limassol are among the pick-up locations in the table. Start with the place where you actually need the car. Then compare it with the other locations if your arrival and accommodation leave that choice open.
An offer uses an office, a meeting point or delivery, and the exact address is arranged before arrival.
Renting a car in Cyprus without a deposit
Separate the rental price from the money held as security. The offer states the deposit amount, the accepted payment method and how the money is returned. A deposit and an insurance excess are different parts of the agreement.
For a booking without a deposit, choose an offer that states this condition. Do not assume that every car in a location has the same terms or that paying the rental in cash also lets you leave the deposit in cash.
Across the 29 of 57 pick-up places with enough cars to compare, 6–54% of listed cars need no deposit.
Cash, cards and the balance at collection
The reservation payment, the balance at collection and the deposit can have different requirements. The card may need to be in the main driver's name.
Cash or a debit card may be accepted for the rental balance but not for the security deposit. Get the answer for the car you intend to reserve, rather than relying on a general description of the destination.
In those places, 97–100% of listed cars accept cash for the rental payment and 95–100% accept card payment.
Insurance and excess: what to compare
Read the insurance terms alongside the price. Look for the excess, the exclusions and the procedure if the car is damaged. Additional cover can change the excess and still leave exclusions in place.
A larger car or an extra insurance option is not permission to use every road. An unpaved section is allowed only where the agreement permits that road, and cover there can differ.
Returning the car in another city
Motorways connect Nicosia with Larnaca, Limassol, Paphos and Ayia Napa. A journey between the coastal cities and a drive onto a forest track are different parts of the route; agree any restricted roads with the supplier.
A trip can begin in Larnaca and end in Paphos, or include a stay in Limassol. A different return location works only where the offer accepts those exact collection and return points. Do not build the itinerary around an unconfirmed one-way booking.
Outside the stated opening hours, the handover follows the supplier's own arrangement.
Planning stops around your rental
Write down the places you want to stay before choosing the collection point. If your trip includes Paphos, Limassol, Larnaca, Ayia Napa or Protaras, put your stops in order to see where you will need the car.
Leave room in the plan for collection and return. Driving estimates from a map do not include a vehicle inspection or the handover, and an itinerary should not depend on an unconfirmed delivery address.
Dates, road conditions and your choice of car
Surfaced roads link towns; forest tracks may be unpaved. Wet weather calls for extra care on those tracks. A shortcut on the map can therefore mean a different kind of road from the one you left.
Troodos gets snow in winter. Rental restrictions apply to mountain routes as well. Choose the car for the roads, luggage and passengers; a larger vehicle does not remove those restrictions.
Driving in Cyprus: road rules and documents
Cyprus drives on the left. Seat belts are compulsory in front and rear seats, and holding a mobile phone while driving is prohibited. Children need a restraint appropriate to their weight.
The supplier sets which driving licence and identity documents it accepts, whether your licence needs an International Driving Permit and what driver age and experience the offer requires. At the handover, take time to find the controls before joining the road.
Crossing the Green Line in a rental car
The Green Line separates the government-controlled area of the Republic of Cyprus from the north. Use a designated crossing. Ledra Street and Ledra Palace in Nicosia are pedestrian crossings; Agios Dometios accepts vehicles.
Rental insurance from the Republic often excludes the north. Correct insurance documents are required at the crossing; some checkpoints sell northern cover. Taking this particular car across needs the supplier's permission, and the offer sets the cover there.
Car hire in Cyprus: FAQ
Booking & payment

Can I pay in cash or with a debit card?
Across the 29 of 57 places with enough cars to compare, 97–100% of listed cars accept cash for the rental payment and 95–100% accept cards. The type of card and the deposit requirements differ by offer.
When should I book?
Compare cars once your dates and collection point are known. Read the cancellation terms before reserving; do not assume an offer can be cancelled without a charge.
Prices
How much does car hire in Cyprus cost?
The current country-wide starting price is $13.48 a day, checked on . Your own pick-up location and dates give the rental total, before extras and return charges.
Documents & drivers
Is insurance included?
Each offer lists its insurance, the excess and the exclusions, and what any additional cover changes.
Do I need an International Driving Permit?
It depends on your licence: current official guidance and the supplier set the requirement. Bring the identity and driving documents required by the offer.
What is the minimum driver age?
Use the age and driving-experience requirements of the selected offer. They apply to every driver who will use the car.
Pick-up & return
Can I return the car in another city?
Yes, where the offer accepts your exact collection and return locations; a one-way trip can carry a return charge.
Roads & trips
Do I need a larger car for my route?
Luggage space and passengers decide the size; a larger vehicle does not lift the supplier's road restrictions.
Can I add a child seat or another driver?
The offer shows availability and the charge for each extra; an additional driver needs the same documents and eligibility.
Other questions
Where should I collect the car?
Compare Larnaca, Paphos and Limassol with the place where you need the car. The handover address matters as much as the city.
Can I take a rental car to northern Cyprus?
The Green Line has designated crossings; Ledra Street and Ledra Palace are for pedestrians. A car needs the supplier's permission and insurance for the north.
What should I check when collecting the car?
Compare the car with the handover record, note existing damage and agree the fuel and return terms. Keep the incident contact and the agreed return address with the booking.
