Where to start your road trip
Tbilisi is the natural base for the Georgian Military Road to Kazbegi, the Kakheti wine region and Borjomi: compare car rental in Tbilisi before you plan the route. Most long-haul flights land at Tbilisi Airport, and with Tbilisi Airport car rental you collect the car at the terminal.
Kutaisi suits travellers on low-cost flights from Europe, which land at Kutaisi Airport: see Kutaisi Airport car rental. The city is a good base for the caves and canyons of Imereti and for the road into Svaneti; compare car rental in Kutaisi for a pick-up in town.
Batumi is the start for the Black Sea coast and the mountains of Adjara: compare car rental in Batumi. Batumi Airport is a few minutes from the seafront, and Batumi Airport car rental hands the car over when you land.
You can also pick up a car closer to the mountains, with car rental in Kazbegi (Stepantsminda), car rental in Gudauri, car rental in Telavi or car rental in Borjomi. Each city page covers local parking, pick-up points and day trips.
Driving between Tbilisi, Kutaisi and Batumi
One main highway crosses the country from east to west. Tbilisi to Kutaisi is about 230 km, or about 3.5 hours. Kutaisi to Batumi is about 150 km, or about 2.5 hours. The whole drive from Tbilisi to Batumi is about 370 km and takes about 5.5–6 hours with short stops. In winter, snow is possible on the Rikoti Pass section between the east and the west of the country.
You do not have to drive back to where you started. A one-way rental lets you land in Kutaisi and fly home from Tbilisi, or drive from Tbilisi to Batumi and leave the car by the sea. Not every supplier covers every route, so check the drop-off city and any one-way fee in the offer.
Classic road trips across Georgia
Two routes cover what most first-time visitors want to see. Both work in either direction. With one week, choose the east loop. With ten days or more, the west-to-east route adds the coast and Svaneti.
7-day east loop: Tbilisi – Kazbegi – Kakheti.
- Days 1–2: Tbilisi, with a short trip to Mtskheta.
- Day 3: Tbilisi to Kazbegi (Stepantsminda) on the Georgian Military Road, with stops at Ananuri fortress and Gudauri.
- Day 4: the Kazbegi area and Gergeti Trinity Church. Driving to Juta in a rental car is prohibited; you will need other transport to reach the valley.
- Day 5: Kazbegi to Kakheti.
- Day 6: Telavi, Sighnaghi and Tsinandali. If you visit wineries, plan a driver who does not drink.
- Day 7: back to Tbilisi, and return the car.
10–12-day route: Kutaisi – Svaneti – Batumi – Borjomi – Tbilisi.
- Days 1–2: pick up in Kutaisi and visit the Okatse or Martvili canyon.
- Days 3–4: Kutaisi to Mestia via Zugdidi, about 230 km and 4.5–5 hours on a mountain road. Ushguli is about 45 km further on a partly unpaved road. The Mestia–Ushguli–Lentekhi route is allowed only from May to September and only for a car with the designated travel option. Without it, leave the rental car and arrange another way to travel.
- Day 5: Mestia to Batumi via Zugdidi, about 250 km.
- Days 6–7: Batumi, the coast and day trips into the Adjara mountains.
- Days 8–9: Batumi to Borjomi. The Akhaltsikhe–Batumi route over the Goderdzi Pass is prohibited for rental cars. Plan your way along permitted paved public roads. The Vardzia cave city is a day trip from Akhaltsikhe.
- Days 10–12: Borjomi to Tbilisi, about 160 km. Return the car in the city or at Tbilisi Airport.
Seasons, mountain roads and winter driving
December to March: heavy snow can close mountain passes for hours or days. This includes the Jvari Pass on the road to Kazbegi and the road into Svaneti. For any mountain trip, book winter tyres or snow chains with the car; the conditions block above shows how many cars offer them. The ski season at Gudauri and Bakuriani, near Borjomi, brings extra weekend traffic.
April to May: the main passes are open again, but late snow is still possible at altitude. Check the road status before you drive to Kazbegi or Svaneti. Rental cars may use only paved public roads. Do not include unpaved village roads in your route.
June to September: all main roads and passes are normally open. The road over the Abano Pass to Tusheti opens only in summer, but driving to Tusheti in a rental car is prohibited. You need other transport to visit Tusheti; four-wheel drive does not lift the ban. July and August bring heavy traffic to the coast around Batumi, Kobuleti and Shekvetili, especially at weekends.
October to November: roads are quieter, and the mountain views are often clear. The first snow can reach the high passes by late October.
For mountain roads in any season, a car with four-wheel or all-wheel drive gives more grip on snow and gravel. See 4x4 rental in Georgia.
Driving rules in Georgia for visitors
Georgia is straightforward to drive for visitors used to right-hand traffic, but a handful of local rules and habits are worth knowing before you set off.
- Right-hand traffic — traffic drives on the right, and most rental cars are automatics.
- Speed limits — limits are signposted: for a passenger car without a trailer, the general limits are 60 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on other roads and 110 km/h on motorways; obey any lower posted limit.
- Cameras and fines — speed and lane cameras are common on main roads and in every city. Fines are linked to the car and passed on by the supplier, often with a handling fee, so check the offer for how this is handled.
- Alcohol — Georgia has a very low legal alcohol limit for drivers, stricter than in many home countries: do not drink and drive at all.
- Licence — tourists can usually drive on their national licence if it is in Latin script. Bring an International Driving Permit if your licence uses another alphabet; some suppliers ask for one anyway.
- Documents — keep your passport, driving licence and the rental agreement in the car. Police checks on the highways are routine and usually brief.
- Fuel, no tolls — there are no toll roads in Georgia. Petrol stations are frequent on the main highways but sparser in remote areas, so fill up before heading into Svaneti or the high passes near Kazbegi. Driving to Tusheti in a rental car is prohibited.
- Mountain and rural roads — expect assertive overtaking on two-lane roads, livestock on rural roads and unlit stretches after dark. Avoid unfamiliar mountain roads at night and keep an offline map: mobile signal and GPS can drop in narrow valleys.
- New drivers — many suppliers only rent to drivers with at least one to two years of experience.
Crossing into Armenia or Turkey
A trip to Armenia requires the supplier's written permission and the right documents. 8 cars in the current search have an Armenia cross-border option. Check the cross-border conditions in the car's listing before you book. Taking a rental car into Turkey is prohibited under the current general rental terms.
If your car is not allowed to cross, you can cross the border on foot or by public transport and rent another car on the other side.

Booking & payment
Can I pay in cash or by debit card?
Yes. Across the 16 pick-up places we compare, the share of cars that accept cash at pick-up is 100%, and card payment 26–43%. The city pages show the numbers for each place, and no credit card is needed to reserve the car.
Can I rent a car in Georgia without a deposit?
Yes. Across the 16 pick-up places we compare, 76% (Sarpi) to 87% (Mtskheta) of the cars listed need no deposit. Use the “No deposit” filter in the search. For the other cars the deposit amount is shown on each offer before you book.
Is insurance included, and what is the excess?
Offers usually include basic insurance with an excess: the most you pay if the car is damaged. The insurance, the excess and any option to reduce it are listed in each offer before you pay, so compare them together with the deposit. A lower excess is worth considering for mountain roads.
Prices

On , rental cars in Georgia cost from $22.41 a day, and a typical car costs $58.72–$77.43 a day, depending on the pick-up place. Documents & drivers
Do I need an International Driving Permit?
If your licence is in Latin script, a national licence is generally accepted for tourists driving in Georgia. If it uses another alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit — some suppliers ask for one regardless, so check before you travel.
Pick-up & return
Can I return the car in a different city?
Yes. One-way rentals between Tbilisi, Kutaisi and Batumi are common, so you do not need to drive back to where you started. Not every supplier covers every route, and a one-way fee may apply. Choose the drop-off city in the search to see the offers for your route.
Roads & trips
What is the best time of year for a road trip in Georgia?
June to September is the most reliable time for mountain roads: the passes to Kazbegi and Svaneti are normally open. Summer and the New Year holidays are also the busiest weeks. Spring and autumn are quieter, but snow is possible on high passes. In winter, book winter tyres or chains for any mountain trip.
Do I need a 4x4 for Svaneti or Kazbegi?
A standard car is enough for the paved roads to Kazbegi and to Mestia in summer. For permitted winter mountain routes, choose four-wheel or all-wheel drive and winter tyres. Driving to Tusheti in a rental car is prohibited. The Mestia–Ushguli–Lentekhi route is allowed only from May to September and only for a car with the designated travel option; four-wheel drive alone does not give that right.
Can I take a rental car to Armenia or Turkey?
A trip to Armenia requires the supplier's written permission and the right documents. 8 cars in the current search have an Armenia cross-border option. Check the cross-border conditions in the car's listing before you book. Taking a rental car into Turkey is prohibited under the current general rental terms.
Is it safe to drive in Georgia?
Main roads are in good condition and have signs in Latin script. Local drivers can overtake aggressively, animals walk on rural roads, and mountain roads need extra care in bad weather and after dark. Read the driving rules section on this page before your trip.
Other questions
Which city should I start from: Tbilisi, Kutaisi or Batumi?
Tbilisi is a starting point for routes to Kazbegi and Kakheti. Kutaisi suits low-cost flights from Europe and the road into Svaneti. Batumi is the best start if the Black Sea coast and the Adjara mountains come first. One highway links all three cities.
Can I get a child seat or a ski rack with the car?
Yes. Add the extras when you book, because the number is limited, and check the price in the offer, because they are not always free.
