Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International, on the south-east coast near Mahébourg, is the island's only international airport and the one pick-up point where a supplier representative meets you in person rather than delivering the car elsewhere. Delivered to your hotel: Grand Baie, Flic en Flac, Belle Mare, Port Louis and beyond

Away from the airport, almost every car on the island is delivered rather than collected from a desk, and local and international suppliers draw on one island-wide fleet. That means the choice you see for Grand Baie is close to the choice for Belle Mare or Port Louis; what changes between areas is mostly how far the nearest delivery point is, not what cars are on offer. Port Louis is the outlier: hotel or apartment delivery still works there, but the compact centre has more traffic and paid on-street parking than anywhere else on the island, so ask your supplier about a car park near your accommodation if you're staying downtown rather than on the outskirts.

Delivery works the same way everywhere: give your address and arrival time when you book, the supplier meets you at the hotel or villa reception with the paperwork, and collects the car at the end of the rental. The offers on this page mix Mauritian companies with international brands, and neither dominates: local suppliers make up most of the delivered fleet, while international names are more visible at the airport. Beyond the name on the car, what actually differs between one offer and another is the deposit required, the insurance excess, the age of the car, and how far the supplier will deliver — all shown in each offer's own conditions, along with reviews. There's no reason to rule a company in or out by size alone; read what's included before you book.

To keep the price down: book ahead of the October peak rather than close to your travel dates, watch the January dip in the price-by-month chart above, choose one of the small automatics from $26.20 a day, and look at a longer rental if your trip allows it, since the per-day rate usually drops the longer you keep the car. Deposits, insurance and cancellation

The insurance included with each offer covers the basics, and there's an excess you're liable for if something happens — check what's covered and what the excess is before you book, since both vary by supplier and by car. On the island's narrower coastal roads, cane-field lanes and tighter resort car parks, it's worth weighing up extra cover.

Free cancellation is only on a minority of offers (17), so filter for it if your plans could still change. Payment is usually split between a part online at booking and the rest at hand-over; 160 of offers don't require a credit card at all, but check whether the balance at hand-over can be paid by card or only in cash.

If something goes wrong on the road, roadside assistance is normally part of the package; check how to reach the supplier and what they expect at the scene of a breakdown or accident, such as photos and a police report for anything beyond minor damage, so the excess actually applies when you need it.

Driving in Mauritius: rules, licence and safety

Mauritius drives on the left, as in the UK, with the steering wheel on the right — which matters less than usual here, since nearly every rental car is an automatic (99), so there's no gear change to relearn as well. The M1/M2 motorway linking north and south is straightforward and well surfaced. Away from it, coastal and village roads narrow quickly and share space with buses, scooters, pedestrians and the occasional dog, often with no pavement at all; it's worth avoiding unlit roads after dark where you can, and allowing extra time for Port Louis's rush-hour traffic.

On paperwork: bring your licence and passport to the hand-over, and check with your supplier in advance whether your licence is accepted as it is or whether an International Driving Permit is recommended for your nationality — worth confirming before you travel rather than at the counter. Minimum age and any young-driver surcharge are set by each supplier (152) and shown on the offer. Rules on speed, roundabouts and drink-driving are enforced; check the current limits with your supplier or a local source rather than assume they match home.

Drive times and a day around the island

Mauritius looks small on a map, and the distances are short, but the roads rarely let you go fast, so allow a full day with stops rather than trying to rush a loop in an afternoon. A typical route: start in the north around Grand Baie and Cap Malheureux, follow the west coast down to Flic en Flac, cut inland to Chamarel and the Black River Gorges, continue to Le Morne on the south-west tip, then the south coast at Bel Ombre and Gris Gris, finishing on the east coast at Blue Bay or Belle Mare. Traffic around Port Louis and village speed limits eat up more time than the distances suggest, so build in slack rather than a tight schedule.

For the car itself: a small automatic handles almost every road on the island comfortably, and a 4x4 isn't necessary — supply is thin and no route here calls for one. Families travelling together can look at a 7-seater from $37.42 a day; premium cars exist in the fleet but only in small numbers.
