Picking up at a Moroccan airport

Most visitors start their rental where they land, and in Morocco that is easy: in the big cities, every car we list can also be collected at the city's airport, so driving off after arrivals is the norm rather than an extra. Right now we compare cars in 42 places, from $17.09 a day.

Delivery to smaller towns: Essaouira, Ouarzazate, Meknes and more

Outside the six big cities (Casablanca, Marrakech, Rabat, Tangier, Agadir and Fes), suppliers rarely keep cars in town. Almost every car offered in smaller places is delivered from a bigger city, so the price includes the drive and can be much higher than picking up in the nearest city. Nador and Oujda in the north-east are the clearest example: their cars come from far away.

• The south: Ouarzazate, the gateway to the desert and the Atlas.
• The north: Tetouan, near Tangier and Chefchaouen.
• Near the capital: Kenitra, north of Rabat.

For Meknes, about an hour west of Fes, collecting a car in Fes or at Fes airport is usually cheaper than delivery. Local and international rental companies compared

We compare international brands and local Moroccan companies side by side. Local firms make up most of the supply, especially away from the airports, and many of them offer terms that international brands don't, such as no deposit or delivery to your riad's nearest car park. The name on the car matters less than the conditions attached to it:

• the deposit and how it is blocked or paid;
• the insurance excess and what the included cover leaves out;
• the car's age and whether it is manual or automatic;
• the fuel policy: full-to-full is the fairest;
• whether delivery or an airport hand-over is included.

Cheap car hire in Morocco: what lowers the price

Morocco is one of the cheaper countries in the region for car hire, and a few choices make a big difference:

• Pick up in a big city. Casablanca and Rabat are often the cheapest; delivered towns cost more.
• Drive a manual. Only about 69% of cars are automatics. Manuals are more common and usually cheaper, especially in small towns.
• Choose a small car. Small cars start from $17.09 a day and are easiest in city traffic.
• Rent for longer. The daily price falls with longer rentals; see the price-by-length chart on this page.
• Book ahead of the peaks. Summer, Easter and the Eid holidays fill up early; the price-by-month chart shows the seasonal curve.

A low headline price can hide a high excess, a big deposit, a full-to-empty fuel policy or a mileage limit. Unlimited mileage is offered on 97% of cars, which matters on long road trips.

No deposit, insurance and payment

Most cars in Morocco can be rented without a deposit: 69% of the offers we see right now, with the cheapest no-deposit car from $25.06 a day. 405 cars can be booked without a credit card. Usually you pay part of the price online and the rest at hand-over; each offer says whether the balance can be paid in cash or by card.

The included insurance normally covers damage with an excess, the amount you pay if something happens. In Morocco a lower excess is worth considering if you plan to drive in medina areas with narrow lanes, on gravel pistes or on long night-time stretches. Driving in Morocco: rules, licence and safety

Morocco drives on the right, like mainland Europe and the US; drivers from the UK switch sides. Is it safe? Yes for a careful driver, and many visitors find it one of the most rewarding ways to see the country. What to expect:

• Motorways (autoroutes) link the big cities; they are in good condition and tolled.
• National roads are mostly two-lane, shared with trucks, shared taxis, carts, cyclists and pedestrians. Overtake with patience.
• Mountain passes in the Atlas are slow, with hairpins and trucks. Weather can close the high passes in winter; check before you set off.
• Police checkpoints are common at town entrances. Slow down, stop when waved, and keep your licence, passport and rental papers to hand.
• Night driving outside towns is best avoided: unlit roads, unlit carts and animals.
• Medinas are for walking. Park outside in a guarded car park, where an attendant watches the cars for a small tip.

Paperwork: bring your national licence and passport. An International Driving Permit is often recommended, and some suppliers ask for one, so check your offer's conditions. Speed limits are enforced, including by radar, and the rules on alcohol are strict; check the current limits before you drive. Minimum age and any young-driver surcharge are set by each supplier and shown in the offer.

Morocco road trip: routes and drive times

Three classic self-drive loops, with approximate driving times:

• Marrakech to the desert: over the Tizi n'Tichka pass to Aït Benhaddou and Ouarzazate, on through the Dades and Todra gorges to the Merzouga dunes, and back via the Draa valley. Allow about a week; Marrakech to Merzouga alone is a long two-day drive.
• The imperial cities: Fes, Meknes, Rabat, Casablanca and Marrakech, mostly on the motorway, in about 5–7 days.
• The north and the Atlantic: Tangier, Chefchaouen and Fes, or Tangier down the coast via Rabat and Casablanca to Essaouira and Agadir.

One week covers one loop comfortably; two weeks, two. One-way rentals, such as picking up in Tangier and dropping off in Marrakech, are possible with many suppliers; the offer shows any one-way fee. Coming from Spain by ferry

Ferries cross the Strait of Gibraltar several times a day: from Tarifa to Tangier's city port and from Algeciras to Tanger Med take about an hour to an hour and a half, and there are longer routes from southern Spain to Melilla and Nador. A car rented in Spain usually cannot be taken to Morocco, and a Moroccan rental cannot leave the country. So the easy plan is to cross as a foot passenger and pick up a car on arrival, in Tangier or at Tangier Airport, or in Nador for the east. Bringing your own car from Europe is a different matter, with temporary import paperwork at the border and insurance valid for Morocco; check the requirements before you travel.
