Getting to Praslin from Mahé: ferry or a short flight

Praslin is the second-largest island of the Seychelles, north-east of Mahé, and there are two ways to get there:

• By fast ferry from the Inter-Island Quay in Victoria to Baie Ste Anne jetty on Praslin's east coast: about an hour, and it can be choppy when the trade winds blow.
• By plane from the domestic terminal next to Seychelles International Airport to Praslin's airstrip on the west side of the island: about 15–20 minutes.

Either way, a rental car from Mahé does not come with you. The ferries carry foot passengers, and rental contracts keep the car on its own island. Return the Mahé car before you cross, either at the airport before a Praslin flight or in Victoria before the ferry, and rent again on Praslin. La Digue, about 15 minutes on by ferry from Baie Ste Anne, has almost no cars; you visit it on foot or by bicycle.

On arrival day you can have the Praslin car waiting at the jetty or the airstrip, or delivered to your guesthouse later if you take a taxi first.

How the car reaches you: guesthouse, jetty or airstrip

Vallée de Mai, Anse Lazio and a day around the island

Praslin is only about 11 km long, so nothing is more than about half an hour's drive away. What most people use the car for:

• Vallée de Mai: the UNESCO-listed palm forest, home of the coco de mer, on the cross-island road between Grand Anse and Baie Ste Anne. It has its own car park; go early, before the tour groups.
• Anse Lazio: the famous beach at the north-west tip, reached past Anse Boudin. The small car park fills by late morning, so arrive early or late in the afternoon.
• Côte d'Or (Anse Volbert): the main beach strip on the north-east coast, with restaurants and shops.
• Grand Anse: the west coast near the airstrip, with guesthouses and sunsets.
• Anse Georgette: one of the island's most beautiful beaches, reached through a resort; check the current access rules before you go.

A relaxed one-day loop: Baie Ste Anne, Vallée de Mai, Grand Anse, Anse Kerlan, Anse Lazio, Côte d'Or and back. Leave plenty of time for stops: the distances are short, the roads are not.

Small island roads and getting around without a car

Praslin's roads are narrow, with sharp bends and few pavements. The road through the Vallée de Mai forest climbs steeply and winds a lot, and buses, pedestrians and dogs share the road everywhere. Traffic drives on the left, and every car on offer is an automatic (100%). There are only a few fuel stations on the island, so fill up when you pass one rather than running low. Street lighting is sparse, so plan longer drives for daylight.

Without a car, you can use the public buses on the main routes (slow, and infrequent in the evening), taxis (fine for a single trip, expensive for daily use), or bicycles and e-bikes around Côte d'Or. If you stay at a resort with its own beach and plan few excursions, you may not need a car at all. If you want to see both coasts, Vallée de Mai and Anse Lazio on your own schedule, a car for part of the stay is the easy way.
