Where you pick up the car at Seychelles Airport

Seychelles International Airport sits on Mahé's east coast, south of Victoria. The international terminal and the small domestic terminal for flights to Praslin stand side by side, so everything happens within a few minutes' walk. Car hand-over here is personal rather than desk-based: most suppliers send a representative who waits for you after arrivals with a name board, walks you to the car park and does the paperwork next to the car.

The hand-over itself takes about 15–20 minutes. Have these ready:

• your driving licence and passport;
• the booking confirmation on your phone;
• the card or cash for any balance due on collection, as stated in your offer.

Walk round the car with the representative, photograph every side and the fuel gauge, and check that the air conditioning works before you drive off. Give your flight number when you book: if the flight is late, the supplier can see it and wait. For a night arrival, check in the offer conditions whether an out-of-hours hand-over costs extra.

The first drive: left-hand traffic and mountain roads

The Seychelles drive on the left. Every car available here is an automatic (100%), so only the side of the road is new. Set your navigation before you leave the car park. Out of the airport you join the east coast road: turn north for Victoria and Eden Island, south for Anse Royale and the southern beaches.

Approximate drive times from the airport in normal traffic:

• Eden Island: about 15 minutes;
• Victoria: about 20 minutes;
• Beau Vallon: about 35–40 minutes, through Victoria and over the hill;
• the south-west beaches: about 30–40 minutes.

To reach the west coast you cross the mountains on the Sans Souci or La Misère road: steep, narrow and full of hairpins, with buses coming the other way. If you land late in the afternoon, consider going to a hotel on the east side first and taking the mountain road the next morning. Airport pick-up or delivery to your hotel?

On Mahé you choose between two ways of getting the car, and the choice of cars is the same either way: the airport and the rest of the island share one fleet. The prices on this page are online prices, booked in advance; there is no separate walk-up price to compare.

Airport pick-up is the better choice when:

• you land in daylight and want to drive straight to a hotel on the west or south coast;
• you want the car from the first hour, for example to go shopping or reach a villa without transfers;
• you are staying for most of your trip on Mahé.

Hotel delivery is the better choice when you arrive late at night, your hotel transfer is already included, or you spend the first night or two in Victoria without needing a car. You can combine both: have the car delivered to your hotel and return it at the airport on your last day. Check the offer conditions for any fee when the return place differs from the delivery place.

Returning the car before your flight

Agree the meeting point and time for the return when you book, and confirm them with the representative at pick-up. Plan the last drive generously: the mountain roads are slow, and traffic around Victoria can build up at rush hour. Refuel before you head to the airport if your offer has a full-to-full fuel policy, then photograph the car, the fuel gauge and the dashboard at hand-back and ask the representative to confirm that everything is in order.

For early-morning or late-night departures, check that the supplier can meet you at that hour, or arrange to leave the car the evening before.
