If you collect at MRU, use your accommodation's address as the destination rather than just Grand Baie. A hotel in Trou aux Biches and a villa near Cap Malheureux are different final stops, even if both appear in a search for a north-coast stay. Save the map pin before setting off. The airport-to-Grand-Baie estimate gets you to the area; leave room for the last part through local streets and for finding the entrance.

If you already have a transfer, decide which days actually need a car. A beach morning in Pereybère and a boat trip leaving from the bay do not require the same transport plan as a drive to Pamplemousses. You can arrange the rental around your outings, provided the supplier confirms the delivery and return times. Compare that shorter rental with collecting at the airport for the whole stay, including the transfer you would still need.

Reception is a useful meeting point when the booking is for a hotel, but a private villa needs more detail. Send the property name, address and map pin, and ask where the representative will wait. If you are staying outside Grand Baie itself, get confirmation of that location before relying on delivery. Leave a gap between the hand-over and your first outing. Check the car with the representative, record the fuel level and existing marks, and ask how to contact the supplier during the rental. Catamaran trips to the northern islets leave from the bay itself, so you won't need the car that day. The south-west (Chamarel, Le Morne) makes a long day from the north; if the west coast is a priority, consider a few nights in Flic en Flac instead.

For a beach day, choose a stretch of coast rather than trying to tick off every beach. Pereybère and Cap Malheureux fit a trip north from Grand Baie; Mont Choisy and Trou aux Biches take you along the other side. That gives the car a clear job: getting you from your accommodation to the beach you want, with time to stay there. The short distances are useful, but parking and the village traffic still belong in the day's plan.

Pamplemousses and Port Louis make a different outing from hopping between beaches. Set your destination to the garden or the parking place you intend to use in the capital, and check current visitor information before leaving. For Port Louis, the rounded drive time is not a promise for a busy journey. If you also want an evening back at the bay, leave space between the return drive and your plans there.

Before booking a villa, ask where the rental car would stay overnight. A photograph of a driveway does not tell you whether it is available to guests, and a central address does not guarantee a space outside. For an evening near the bay, check the signs and terms at the car park you choose. Shopping-centre parking is a possibility to investigate, not a guarantee of free parking or unrestricted access after the shops close.

Choose for the passengers and bags you will actually carry. A compact can suit beach outings around Grand Baie, while an airport collection also means fitting the luggage from your flight. Check the selected model's boot and seating information before deciding. A larger vehicle may solve a luggage problem but takes more space in the village; compare those needs rather than choosing by the daily price alone. An automatic gearbox also does not remove the need to get comfortable with left-hand traffic.
