Is long-term car hire in Mauritius worth it?
A month-long hire earns its place when your base lies outside the central corridor. The Metro Express light rail links Port Louis (Victoria station) with Curepipe through Rose Hill, Quatre Bornes, Phoenix and Vacoas, but it has no stop in Grand Baie or Flic en Flac, so a remote worker settled in either resort town still needs a car for shopping, the beach and the evenings out.
Grand Baie is the shopping and leisure area of the north, where Mauritians themselves go for restaurants, bars and discos, and its La Cuvette beach has been renovated. Some long-stay renters are bridging a purchase. A second-hand car brought in from abroad needs an import permit, applied for before shipment at the Ministry of Commerce and Consumer Protection, and a monthly hire car keeps you mobile in the meantime.
