Is it worth hiring a car in Istanbul?
Car hire in Istanbul is worth it for the days you drive out of the city, and much less for the days you spend inside it. Both airports have public transport: Istanbul Airport lists Havaist buses, İETT buses and the M11 metro line to Gayrettepe, all boarding on the transportation floor, and the M4 metro line reaches Sabiha Gökçen Airport, where Havaist and İETT buses also run to Taksim and Kadıköy.
That makes the start date of the rental the main decision. If the first days are on foot, reach the city by metro or bus and begin the rental on the first day you drive out. Arrange the collection around the driving part of the trip, and ask the rental company to confirm a late collection or a hand-over at an address, because neither is automatically free.
Istanbul Airport car rental: collecting your car at IST
At Istanbul Airport (IST) the car rental companies are on the landside of domestic arrivals and offer service around the clock, according to the airport's own car rental page, which carries a map for each office. The airport is in the Arnavutköy district on the European side, and Wikipedia lists the O-7 motorway and the D.020 road as the ways to reach it by car.
To rent a car at Istanbul Airport, remember that the hand-over point is the named airport and meeting point, not the city name. Find your rental company's office on the airport map before you land, so the walk from the arrivals hall is no surprise. A car at Istanbul Airport is collected where the offer says, not where the terminal happens to be.
Which airport for your Istanbul car rental: IST or SAW?
Pick the airport on the side of the Bosphorus where you sleep. Istanbul Airport is on the European side; Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) is in Pendik/Kurtköy on the Anatolian (Asian) side. SAW's own information page gives road distances of about 50 km to Taksim and about 40 km to Kadıköy, and a link of about 1.5 km to the TEM motorway.
At SAW all rent-a-car offices are on the arrivals level of the terminal building and open around the clock. Collecting at the airport on the wrong continent puts a Bosphorus crossing into your first drive, so check which airport the offer names before you book.
Tolls and Bosphorus crossings
KGM, the Turkish highways agency, says vehicles with foreign licence plates must register for HGS or OGS before using a tollway and that cash payment is not accepted; the Bosphorus bridges are among its toll stations. How tolls are charged on a rental car is stated by the rental company, so ask at the desk before you drive off. Rental locations in Istanbul include both airports, one on each continent.
Istanbul has four road crossings of the Bosphorus:
- Bosphorus Bridge and Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, both of them bridges between Europe and Asia.
- Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge, where the toll is charged in both directions and payable only electronically.
- Eurasia Tunnel, a highway tunnel between Kazlıçeşme on the European side and Göztepe on the Asian side, whose toll can be paid online.
Marmaray also passes under the strait, but it is a commuter rail line in a tunnel, not a road crossing. Note the crossings your route uses and ask the rental company how each toll is charged.

Edirne is about 224 km from Istanbul and Çanakkale about 310 km; these are about figures from the city, not road measurements. For Bursa, decide which nights belong to the city stay and which to the drive.
