Car rental in Izmir: airport or city pick-up?

İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB) is the airport for car hire in Izmir: it lies in Gaziemir, about 14 to 16 km southwest of central Izmir, has a domestic and an international terminal, and is operated by TAV Airports. The Turkey hub rules apply to every collection: at an airport the named airport and meeting point matter, not the city name, and hotel delivery, late collection and an airport hand-over each need their own confirmation.

Choose the collection point on the side of town where you sleep, and read the meeting point in the offer before you fix a flight time around it.

Is it worth hiring a car in Izmir?

Yes for the day trips below, much less so for getting from the airport into town. Wikipedia lists the 200, 202, 204 and 206 buses and the İZBAN suburban rail line among the ways to reach the airport from the city.

What are the roads like around Izmir?

UK government travel advice says roads between major cities are generally in excellent condition, but the surface can be poor in remote areas, accidents are common and drivers should take care at night.
