Driving and parking in Batumi

Batumi's old town and boulevard are easy to cover on foot, so a car mostly pays off once you head out of the city. From June to September traffic on the seafront road and the approaches to the boulevard slows down noticeably, especially in the evening when locals and visitors walk and drive along the same stretch — allow extra time if you are heading to or from the airport around sunset.

Parking directly on the boulevard is limited and fills up fast in summer; look for the marked paid bays a block or two inland, or use a hotel's own parking if it has one. Many guesthouses in the old town do not have private parking, so check before you book. Away from the seafront, side streets and the newer districts around Gorgiladze and Chavchavadze are easier for parking.

Into the Adjara mountains

• Makhuntseti waterfall and Queen Tamar's bridge — about 30 km from Batumi on a paved road through the Adjara valley; an easy half-day trip in any car.
• Mtirala National Park — about 30 km, with forest trails, a lake and one of the wettest microclimates in Georgia; the park access road is paved but can be slippery after rain.
• Goderdzi ski resort — about 100 km and roughly 2.5 hours of mountain driving. The road climbs steadily and narrows in places; in winter it is snow-covered and can require chains. Choose an SUV or 4x4 with winter tyres for a trip to Goderdzi between roughly November and April.

Beyond Makhuntseti and Mtirala, roads into the smaller Adjara villages are narrower and less consistently maintained, so extra ground clearance helps even outside winter.

Mtirala's main trail is a return walk of a few hours through lush, rain-fed forest to a waterfall and swimming pools, and the park entrance has a small visitor centre with trail maps. Makhuntseti makes an easy stop on the way further into Adjara, with a spot to swim in the river below the old bridge in summer. Goderdzi's ski season typically runs from December through March, when snow depth and road conditions can change quickly; outside those months the resort is quiet and the same road is far easier to drive, though its upper section stays unpaved. Villages beyond Goderdzi are best left to experienced mountain drivers.

Because of the driving time involved, many visitors treat Goderdzi as a full day trip from Batumi, leaving early so there is still daylight for the return leg down the pass; overnighting near the resort is an option in season if you would rather not rush.

Sarpi border and driving to Turkey

The Sarpi border crossing is about 15 km south of Batumi and is a common day-trip stop or a gateway if you are continuing overland into Turkey.
