How one-way car rental works in Georgia

A one-way rental lets you collect a car in one Georgian city and hand it back in a different one, instead of driving the same road there and back. It suits any trip that runs in a straight line rather than a loop — starting in the capital and finishing on the coast, or landing at one airport and flying home from another.

The mechanics are simple. You choose a pick-up city and a drop-off city when you search, and the offers that come back already reflect the one-way trip: the one-way fee that covers moving the car back afterwards is either built into the daily price you see or listed as a separate line in the offer, depending on the supplier. Either way, it is shown before you book, so you can compare the total cost across a few suppliers rather than discovering the fee at the counter.

Not every car is offered for every pick-up and drop-off combination — availability depends on where a supplier is based and how often renters travel that direction. Tbilisi, Kutaisi and Batumi between them cover the routes most visitors need; the route table above shows current cars and prices for each direction, and it is worth checking both directions of a route if your dates are flexible, since the fleet and the price rarely match exactly.

Pick-up and drop-off themselves work like any city rental: collect the car at a supplier's office, at the airport, or with delivery to your hotel, and return it at an office or airport in the destination city at an agreed time. As with a standard rental, expect to pay about 15–20% online when you book, with the rest due at pick-up, on top of whatever one-way fee the offer shows.

Main one-way routes and drive times

Three routes cover most one-way trips in Georgia, and each one works in either direction.

• Tbilisi–Batumi — about 370 km, roughly 5.5–6 hours on the road. All three drive times assume normal conditions with a couple of short stops rather than a nonstop run; add time in winter, when snow is possible around Rikoti Pass on the Tbilisi–Kutaisi–Batumi corridor, and in the height of summer, when traffic through Kutaisi and along the coast road slows things down. Prices differ by direction and by season, not just by distance — a shorter route is not automatically cheaper once demand and the one-way fee are added in, so comparing the actual offers for your dates matters more than the distance on a map.

Flying into one city, out of another

A one-way rental is especially useful when your flights already do not form a loop. Georgia has three international airports — Tbilisi, Kutaisi and Batumi — and it is common to land at one and leave from another, especially since Kutaisi has become a hub for low-cost European flights that do not always connect back to the same city.

A typical combination: land in Kutaisi on a low-cost flight, pick up a car there, and spend the trip working east and south before dropping off in Tbilisi or Batumi and flying out from whichever city has the better onward connection that week. The reverse works just as well — fly into Tbilisi, the busier of the three airports for long-haul and regional connections, and finish the trip on the coast or near Kutaisi before flying home.

The practical side is straightforward: pick up and drop-off can usually be arranged directly at the airport rather than at a city office, which saves a taxi at both ends of the trip. Confirm this when you book, since not every supplier offers airport drop-off on every route, and a very early or late flight can fall outside normal handover hours.

Build in a buffer before a departure flight. Traffic near Tbilisi and Batumi, plus the time a drop-off inspection takes, can turn a comfortable margin into a rushed one if the last leg of the drive runs long.

A sample one-way itinerary

One way to use a one-way rental well is a ten-day loop that never actually loops back on itself:

• Days 1–3, Tbilisi. Pick up the car in the capital, spend a couple of days on the old town and a day trip to Mtskheta, then head out for a day or two in Kakheti wine country, since the car will not be coming back to Tbilisi.
• Days 4–5, on to Kutaisi. Drive the roughly 230 km west, stopping at Gori and Uplistsikhe on the way. Spend a day around Kutaisi itself — Bagrati Cathedral, Gelati Monastery, the Prometheus Cave — rather than rushing straight through.
• Days 6–8, down to the coast. Continue the roughly 150 km to Batumi, with a detour to Martvili Canyon if there is a full day to spare. Use Batumi as a base for the seafront, the botanical garden and a day trip along the coast.
• Days 9–10, drop off and fly out. Return the car in Batumi and fly onward from there, or, if the flight schedule works out better, drop off a day earlier in Kutaisi and fly out of Kutaisi Airport instead of continuing all the way to the coast.

The same shape works in reverse — start on the coast, finish in Tbilisi — or compressed into a week by cutting one of the stops. What makes it worth doing as a one-way trip rather than a round one is simple: driving 370 km back to a starting point you have already seen adds a full day that could instead go to Svaneti, Kazbegi or another detour on a future trip.

Crossing into Armenia with a one-way rental

A one-way rental inside Georgia is a different thing from taking a rental car across an international border, and it is worth keeping the two apart. Most cars listed here are not permitted to leave Georgia at all — the rental agreement simply does not cover it, regardless of how the pick-up and drop-off cities are arranged.

6 cars based in Tbilisi are the exception: they are marked as allowed to cross into Armenia, which opens up a day trip or a longer loop south from the capital. The condition attached to almost all of these is that the car has to come back into Georgia and be returned where it started — dropping it off inside Armenia is usually not an offer, even on cars cleared for the crossing.

If a trip into Armenia is part of the plan, check this before booking rather than after: look for the crossing permission on the car's listing, and ask the supplier directly about which border crossing they expect you to use, what paperwork they provide for it, and whether the insurance stays valid on the other side. None of this is standardised across suppliers, so a confirmation in writing is worth having before you drive up to the border.

For everything else — Batumi, Kutaisi, the mountain routes to Kazbegi or Svaneti — the one-way question is only ever about which Georgian city you start and finish in, not about leaving the country, and the routes above cover that side of the planning.
