Getting to Gudauri
Gudauri is a ski resort about 120 km north of Tbilisi on the Georgian Military Highway. The drive takes about 2.5 hours without snow. The road passes Ananuri fortress and the Zhinvali reservoir, then climbs through switchbacks to the resort.
The highway is paved all the way. Above the resort it continues over the Jvari Pass (about 2,400 m) to Kazbegi; the pass and its winter closures are described on the Kazbegi page.
Pick up in Tbilisi or get the car delivered
There are two ways to have a car in Gudauri. You can pick it up in Tbilisi or at Tbilisi Airport and drive up yourself. Or a supplier can deliver it to your hotel at the resort; any delivery fee is shown in the offer before you book.
Driving yourself gives you the car for stops on the way and for a day trip to Kazbegi. Delivery suits skiers who only need a car for a few days at the resort and prefer not to drive the last switchbacks with ski gear after a flight.
Driving to Gudauri in ski season
The ski season runs roughly from December to April. In these months the switchbacks below the resort and the roads inside it can be icy. Four-wheel drive does not replace winter tyres on snow and ice.
Ask for winter tyres or snow chains when you book. If you bring skis or a snowboard, book a car with a roof rack: racks are fitted before pick-up, not on request at the resort. Drive up in daylight, and check the road status before you set out after heavy snowfall.
Most hotels have their own parking or a parking area nearby. Spaces close to the lifts fill up on busy weekends, so ask your hotel about parking when you book.
Gudauri in summer
From late spring to autumn the road has no snow or ice and any car is enough. Gudauri is known for tandem paragliding over the Aragvi valley, and hiking trails start from the resort. Many visitors stop here on the way to or from Kazbegi rather than stay several nights.
Which car for Gudauri
In summer, or on a clear winter day, a compact car is enough. For a snowy arrival, or if you continue over the Jvari Pass, a car with four-wheel or all-wheel drive gives more grip, but only together with winter tyres.
