Do you actually need a 4x4 in Georgia?
For most itineraries, no. The main highways — Tbilisi to Kutaisi, Batumi, Kazbegi, Kakheti and Borjomi — are paved and well maintained, and an economy or mid-size car handles them fine. City sightseeing, the Batumi coast road, or day trips to Mtskheta, Gudauri or Sighnaghi do not need a 4x4.
Four-wheel drive matters on permitted mountain roads in winter, when snow and ice make ground clearance and proper tyres useful, and passes can close for avalanche control. Some mountain routes stay closed to rental cars whatever the drivetrain; they are listed below.
Compare the car's capabilities and the route restrictions with your actual route.
Where a 4x4 is genuinely useful
Which car you choose matters only after you know the route is allowed. Rental cars may use only paved public roads, and the bans below apply to a 4x4 too.
- Gergeti Trinity Church, Kazbegi — a concrete road leads from Stepantsminda to the church. The old unpaved approach is not allowed for rental cars. A body-on-frame 4x4 is not required for the concrete road alone. Check the current road condition and the rental terms before you go, especially in snow and ice.
- Svaneti beyond Mestia — the road to Ushguli is only partly paved, with rough gravel and river-cut sections that get harder after rain or snow. The Mestia–Ushguli–Lentekhi route is allowed only from May to September and only for a car with the designated travel option. The individual offer states the option.
- Tusheti and Juta — driving to Tusheti over the Abano Pass and to Juta in a rental car is prohibited.
- Winter ski resorts — for Gudauri and Bakuriani, check winter tyres, snow chains and the current road condition. The Akhaltsikhe–Batumi route over the Goderdzi Pass is prohibited for rental cars.
SUV or a body-on-frame 4x4 — what is the difference
An AWD SUV is enough for permitted paved mountain roads.
Not every car advertised as “four-wheel drive” is built the same way. SUV models such as the Toyota RAV4, Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage have different drivetrain variants, so a model name alone does not confirm AWD. For deep mud, rock crawling or steep, loose tracks, an AWD crossover may not be enough.
A body-on-frame 4x4 has a separate ladder frame, low-range gearing and higher clearance — the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, Mitsubishi Pajero and Delica minivan are common examples, alongside the simple Lada Niva, still popular for rough tracks. These cars cost more to rent and run, and are less comfortable on long paved stretches.
Rule of thumb: an AWD SUV suits mountain scenery on permitted paved roads. The specific car and your route matter, not just the label.
Winter tyres, chains and mountain passes
From roughly November to April, snow and ice affect the paved mountain roads as well as the unpaved tracks. The Georgian Military Highway over the Jvari Pass toward Gudauri and Kazbegi is paved but climbs above 2,000 metres and can close for avalanche control or heavy snowfall.
Four-wheel drive does not replace winter tyres on snow and ice. Ask the supplier about winter tyres, snow chains and ski or snowboard racks.
Check road conditions before setting out in winter — local suppliers know the day’s situation on the Military Highway.
What 4x4 rental contracts usually exclude
Renting a 4x4 does not automatically mean the insurance covers off-road driving. Most rental agreements limit cover to maintained roads, and exclude damage from off-road driving, unmarked tracks, or riverbeds and water crossings. Damage to the underside or suspension is a common dispute, so know the boundary first.
Before booking, check the permitted route and the insurance cover in the offer, and photograph the car’s condition before and after. It avoids most disagreements about who pays for damage.
Where to pick up a 4x4 in Georgia
Pick up in Tbilisi for routes toward Kazbegi, and in Kutaisi or Batumi for a trip centred on Svaneti or the coast; compare the options in each city's general search.
