Getting to Kazbegi: the Georgian Military Highway

Kazbegi — officially the town of Stepantsminda, but almost always called Kazbegi after the mountain that towers above it — sits about 155 km north of Tbilisi, on the Georgian Military Highway toward the Russian border. The drive takes about 3–3.5 hours in normal conditions, longer if you stop along the way, which most people do.

The road climbs out of Tbilisi through Ananuri, a walled fortress complex above the turquoise Zhinvali reservoir and a natural first stop, then keeps climbing past the Gudauri ski area toward the Jvari Pass at 2,379 m, marked by the round Soviet-era Russia-Georgia Friendship Monument with views over the Devil's Valley. From the pass, the road drops into the Terek valley and Stepantsminda itself, with Mount Kazbek's glaciers visible on clear days.

The highway is paved and well maintained for its entire length, and an ordinary car handles it comfortably outside winter. Traffic can bunch up near the town itself: Kazbegi sits close to the Upper Lars border crossing with Russia, and freight trucks queueing for the crossing sometimes back up along the last stretch of road, so allow a little extra time on the final approach.

Picking up your car: Tbilisi or delivered to Kazbegi

There is no local rental fleet based in Kazbegi itself. Gergeti Trinity Church, Juta and the Truso valley

• Gergeti Trinity Church — the view everyone comes for, perched on a ridge above Stepantsminda with Mount Kazbek behind it. The lower part of the access road is paved, but the final stretch up to the church is steep, unpaved and rutted. Many visitors leave the rental car in town and go up on foot (about 1.5–2 hours each way) or in a local jeep taxi; if you want to drive it yourself, you need a real 4x4, not a road-biased SUV.
• Juta — a small village further up a side valley, about 40 minutes from Stepantsminda, and the trailhead for hikes toward the Chaukhi massif. The access road is mostly gravel and manageable in a capable SUV or 4x4 in dry weather.
• Truso valley — an atmospheric, largely abandoned valley near the closed border area, with mineral springs and the ruins of villages emptied after a 1991 earthquake and later conflict. The track in is unpaved for its whole length and 4x4-only; most rental agreements will not cover an ordinary car here.
• Sno — a village on the road toward Juta with a small hilltop fortress tower, an easy stop with a paved approach, worth a short detour on the way to Juta.
• Ananuri and Zhinvali reservoir — already passed on the way up from Tbilisi, but worth a longer stop on the return if you rushed through the first time.

Driving the Military Highway in winter

The Georgian Military Highway is paved all the way to Kazbegi, but the Jvari Pass at 2,379 m sees heavy snow from around November to April, and the road can close temporarily for avalanche control or after a heavy snowfall. Closures are usually a matter of hours rather than days, but they are common enough that you should not treat the pass as guaranteed open on a tight schedule. Check the current road status before setting out — Georgia's roads authority posts pass restrictions, and staff at hotels in Gudauri or Stepantsminda usually know the day's situation.

Winter tyres matter more than four-wheel drive on this road: a front-wheel-drive car on good winter tyres often copes better than a 4x4 on worn summer tyres. 674 of the cars in the fleet are fitted with winter tyres, and 384 come with snow chains for the steepest, iciest stretches near the pass. Ask for winter tyres specifically when you book a car for a winter trip rather than assuming the car you are shown already has them.

It rarely affects the mountain passes further back, but it is worth building a little slack into a winter arrival time. If you are combining the trip with skiing, the Gudauri resort sits on the same road about 35 km before Kazbegi and is worth a stop either way.
