Getting to Kazbegi: the Georgian Military Highway
Kazbegi is the common name of Stepantsminda, a town below Mount Kazbek about 155 km north of Tbilisi. The drive takes about 3–3.5 hours without stops. The whole road is the Georgian Military Highway, which continues to the Russian border.
From Tbilisi the road passes Ananuri fortress and the Zhinvali reservoir, then climbs past the Gudauri ski resort to the Jvari Pass (about 2,400 m) with the Friendship Monument above the Devil's Valley. After the pass the road descends into the Terek valley to Stepantsminda.
The highway is paved all the way, and an ordinary car manages it outside winter. Near the town, trucks waiting for the Upper Lars border crossing sometimes queue along the road, so allow extra time for the last kilometres.
Pick up in Tbilisi or get the car delivered
You can pick up the car in Tbilisi or at Tbilisi Airport and drive up yourself. Or a supplier can deliver it to your hotel in Stepantsminda; any delivery fee is shown in the offer before you book.
Driving yourself gives you the car for the whole trip and for stops at Ananuri and Gudauri. Delivery suits travellers who only need a car for a few days in the mountains and prefer not to drive the highway after a flight.
Gergeti, Juta and the Truso valley

Driving to Kazbegi in winter
From about November to April the Jvari Pass gets heavy snow. The road can close for some hours for avalanche control or after heavy snowfall, so do not plan a tight schedule over the pass. Check the road status before you set out; hotels in Gudauri and Stepantsminda usually know the situation of the day.
Four-wheel drive does not replace winter tyres on snow and ice. Ask for winter tyres, and snow chains if you expect fresh snow, when you book. Do not assume the car has them.
Which car for Kazbegi
For the highway, a compact or mid-size car is enough. Choose four-wheel drive if you travel in deep winter together with winter tyres; it does not make Juta or Truso open to a rental car.
