Getting to Borjomi from Tbilisi or Kutaisi

Borjomi sits in a river gorge in southern Georgia, about 160 km from Tbilisi (roughly 2.5–3 hours) and about 150 km from Kutaisi. Both routes are paved and used year-round; the road from Tbilisi runs through Khashuri before climbing into the gorge, while the Kutaisi route crosses more open farmland before joining the same valley road.

Neither route needs a 4x4 in normal conditions — an ordinary compact or mid-size car is enough for the drive itself. The one exception is the side road up to Bakuriani in winter, covered below, where snow and ice make winter tyres worth having.

It is far enough that most visitors treat it as a full day out from Borjomi rather than a quick add-on, especially if you also want to see Rabati on the way.

Both routes are paved and manageable in an ordinary car for most of the year; the appeal of having your own vehicle for this leg is being able to stop at Rabati, Vardzia and the villages in between at your own pace rather than on a fixed tour schedule.

Along the way, the valley opens into farmland and small villages worth a brief stop even if Rabati and Vardzia are the main destinations; neither site has large dedicated parking, so arriving outside the midday tour-bus rush makes finding a space easier.
