Batumi International Airport (BUS) sits about 5 km south of the city centre, right by the Turkish border, so it is one of the shortest airport-to-hotel drives in Georgia. The terminal itself is small — arrivals, a short walk to the car park, and you are on the coast road within minutes. There is no rail link from the airport, so a rental car, a taxi or a hotel transfer are the main ways to reach the city and beyond.

Most local suppliers work on a meet-and-greet basis rather than a staffed rental counter: a representative meets you in the arrivals hall with a name sign and walks you to the car in the adjacent car park. • Sarpi and the Turkish border — about 12 km south, 15–20 minutes along the coast; a popular half-day trip even if you are not crossing over, with beaches and seafood restaurants close to the checkpoint.
• Kobuleti — about 25 km north, 30–35 minutes, Georgia's other big beach resort and a quieter alternative to central Batumi for a longer stay.
• Makhuntseti waterfall and the Adjara foothills — about 30 km inland, 45 minutes–1 hour on a narrower, winding road; a good half-day taste of the mountains without committing to a full Goderdzi trip.
• Kutaisi — about 150 km, 2–2.5 hours on the main highway; a common one-way route if you fly out from there instead, passing through Kobuleti and the coastal lowlands.

All of these are approximate drive times outside peak traffic; allow extra time around the border crossing at Sarpi in high season, when queues build up on both the Georgian and Turkish sides, and add time in wet weather on the inland road towards Makhuntseti.

Good to know

• Hotel delivery is often cheaper than airport handover. Because the airport is so close to the centre, some suppliers charge less — or nothing — for delivering the car to your hotel instead of meeting you at arrivals. It is worth asking, especially for a short rental or a late-night flight.
• Rental cars are rarely allowed into Turkey. Even though Sarpi border is only about 12 km away, most local rental agreements exclude cross-border travel, and insurance will not cover the car once it leaves Georgia. Check the contract before you plan a Turkey side trip, and treat Sarpi as a day visit on foot instead.
• Take an SUV for Goderdzi and mountain Adjara. The coast road is flat and easy in any car, but the route up to Khulo, Goderdzi Pass and the mountain villages above Batumi climbs steeply on a mix of paved and gravel sections. A four-wheel-drive or high-clearance SUV is the safer choice there, particularly outside summer, and it is worth asking about winter tyres or chains if snow is possible.
• Prepayment is usually partial. Most suppliers take about 15–20% online at booking and the rest at pick-up, so budget for a card payment at the airport counter.
• A child seat should be booked, not assumed. If you are travelling with a young child, request the seat when you book rather than at the counter — the small local fleet has a limited number, and they are among the first extras to run out in high season.
