Getting to Telavi: the Gombori Pass or the Sagarejo road
From Tbilisi, take the direct road over the Gombori Pass, or the longer, lower road via Sagarejo and Gurjaani, which is the easier choice in snow, ice or fog. Telavi lies about 90–100 km east of Tbilisi, where the main international airport is.
The two roads in detail:
- Over the Gombori Pass. This is the direct road. It climbs through forest over the Gombori range and takes about 2 hours. It is paved all the way, but it is narrow and has many bends near the top.
- Via Sagarejo and Gurjaani. This road is longer, but it stays lower and runs through the Alazani valley. It is the easier choice in snow, ice or fog.
In winter the Gombori Pass can be icy, and it can close for a short time after heavy snow. From December to March, check the weather before you leave and take the Sagarejo road if you are unsure. Choose an offer with winter tyres; some offers also include snow chains.
From spring to autumn you do not need four-wheel drive on either road. A compact or mid-size car is enough. A common plan is a loop: go out via Sagarejo and Sighnaghi, and come back over the Gombori Pass. Fill up with fuel in Tbilisi or Telavi before you cross the pass.
Pick up in Tbilisi or have the car delivered
You can have the car delivered in Telavi, or pick it up in Tbilisi and drive there yourself. 922 offers on this page include delivery to your hotel or another address in Telavi. Day trips: Alaverdi, Gremi, Tsinandali and Sighnaghi
Telavi is a good base for the monasteries, estates and wine villages of Kakheti. The main sights are close together:
- Alaverdi Monastery, northwest of Telavi: an 11th-century cathedral among vineyards and one of the tallest churches in Georgia.
- Gremi, northeast of Telavi: the citadel and church of the old royal capital of Kakheti, on a hill above the road.
- Tsinandali, southeast of Telavi on the road to Gurjaani: a 19th-century estate of the Chavchavadze family, with a park and a wine cellar.
- Sighnaghi, about 60 km southeast: a walled hilltop town above the Alazani valley. Give it a half day of its own, or visit it on the way from Tbilisi.
All these roads are paved. With your own car you can combine several wineries and villages in one day and stop where you like.
The road to Tusheti over the Abano Pass also starts in the Alazani valley near Telavi. It is an unpaved mountain road, open only in summer and early autumn, and one of the most difficult drives in Georgia. Wine tastings and driving
If you go wine tasting in Kakheti, the driver should not drink at all, because Georgia has a very low alcohol limit for drivers. Large wine estates and small family cellars along the roads between Telavi, Tsinandali and Gremi welcome visitors for a tasting, often with local food, and it is easy to taste wine at two or three places in one afternoon.
Plan the day before you start. Choose a driver who does not drink, book a driver-guide for the winery route, or take a taxi between cellars and leave the rental car at your hotel. Choosing a car for Kakheti
A compact or mid-size car is enough for the Gombori Pass and the paved roads around Telavi for most of the year. An SUV gives more ground clearance on snowy roads in winter. Popular models for this area include Toyota Prius C, Ford Escape, Kia Soul, Subaru Forester, Jeep Compass.
If you plan a long loop through Telavi, Sighnaghi and the wine villages, check the mileage limit in the offer. On back roads a flat tyre is more likely, so check the spare tyre and the jack when you collect the car.
