Do you need a 4x4 from Marrakech?

Honestly, for most of the classic day trips, no. The roads to Imlil, up the Ourika valley, over the Tizi n'Tichka pass and on to Aït Benhaddou are tarmac the whole way and fine in an ordinary car in dry weather. A 4x4 earns its price once you leave that tarmac: on the side tracks above Imlil, after rain or snow closes in on the high passes, out in the stony Agafay desert once you turn off the main road, and on the pistes further south toward the Sahara. If your plan stays on sealed roads, a normal car saves money; if it includes any of those, a 4x4 is the safer call.

Atlas day trips: Imlil, Ourika and Tizi n'Tichka

Imlil, the trailhead village below Toubkal, is about 1.5 hours from Marrakech on a paved road that climbs steadily into the foothills. Both are manageable in a normal car in good weather, though the last stretches wind through switchbacks shared with trucks and local traffic, so take them slowly.

The Tizi n'Tichka pass, the high road toward Ouarzazate, is a longer outing, about 3 hours each way, with the ruined kasbah at Telouet a worthwhile detour partway up. It's tarmac throughout, but it's also Morocco's highest paved pass: fog, rain and occasional snow close in with little warning in winter, and stone falls are more common after heavy rain, so build in slack and don't push on after dark. Continue over the pass and you reach Ouarzazate, a natural base for Aït Benhaddou and the film studios beyond, and a sensible overnight stop rather than a there-and-back in a single day. Oukaïmeden, the ski resort above the Ourika valley, is a similar distance to Imlil and worth combining with it if snow or a high viewpoint is part of the plan; the access road can close briefly after heavy snowfall in winter, so check conditions before you set off.

Desert trips from Marrakech: Agafay, Zagora and Merzouga

Agafay, the stony desert just southwest of the city, is about 40 minutes away and works well as a half-day or overnight trip — close enough that a normal car often manages it, though a 4x4 is worth having if you plan to leave the graded tracks. Zagora and the Draa valley are a longer haul, roughly 7 hours' drive, and realistically a two-day trip rather than a day out. Merzouga and the dunes near the Algerian border are further still and not a day trip from Marrakech at all — plan on three days or a loop with an overnight stop each way, or consider dropping the car in a different city rather than driving the whole round trip. A one-way drop is not standard on every offer and usually carries a fee, so confirm it before you commit to that plan rather than assuming it's included.
