Build the choice around a named route, not the word “Atlas”. Imlil, Ourika and a crossing towards Ouarzazate are different drives, and their final access points matter. Send the supplier the destinations and any track you hope to use. A confirmation of AWD answers the drivetrain question; it does not answer the weather, equipment or insurance questions that go with a particular mountain journey.

Imlil, the trailhead village below Toubkal, is about 1.5 hours from Marrakech on a paved road that climbs steadily into the foothills. The Ourika valley, with its terraced villages and the waterfalls at Setti Fatma, is a day-trip option. Both are manageable in a normal car in good weather, though the last stretches wind through switchbacks shared with trucks and local traffic, so take them slowly.

The Tizi n'Tichka pass, the high road toward Ouarzazate, is a longer mountain outing, with the ruined kasbah at Telouet a worthwhile detour partway up. The main road is paved, but fog, rain and snow can make the high pass hazardous or temporarily impassable in winter. Check current road and weather reports before departure, allow time for a change of route, and avoid pushing on after dark. Continue over the pass and you reach Ouarzazate, a natural base for Aït Benhaddou and the film studios beyond, and a sensible overnight stop rather than a there-and-back in a single day. Oukaïmeden, the ski resort above the Ourika valley, is another mountain trip; the access road can close briefly after heavy snowfall in winter, so check conditions before you set off.

Agafay, the stony desert just southwest of the city, is about 40 minutes away and works well as a half-day or overnight trip — close enough that a normal car often manages it, though a 4x4 is worth having if you plan to leave the graded tracks. Zagora and the Draa valley are a longer haul, roughly 6 hours' drive, and realistically a two-day trip rather than a day out. Merzouga and the dunes near the Algerian border are further still and not a day trip from Marrakech at all — plan on three days or a loop with an overnight stop each way, or consider dropping the car in a different city rather than driving the whole round trip. A one-way drop is not standard on every offer and usually carries a fee. Agafay is a rocky landscape rather than the Sahara's sand dunes, so a stay there is not a rehearsal for driving into Erg Chebbi. Your accommodation tells you which entrance to use, what the final approach is like and whether it provides a transfer from an agreed meeting point. Keep that answer alongside the supplier's route permission. For a longer journey towards Zagora or Merzouga, decide where the overnight stops and the rental return fit before choosing a car purely for the desert photograph.

Insurance is worth reading closely on a 4x4 booking. Standard cover on these offers is built around paved and graded roads, and damage from off-road, piste, sand or water-crossing driving may be excluded or only partly covered — the fine print varies by offer, so check the policy before you assume you're covered on a track. At collection, make the inspection match the trip you described. Ask to see the spare-wheel or repair arrangement and the assistance contact, and check any equipment agreed at booking. Do not assume recovery from a remote track is included because the vehicle appears in a 4x4 category.
