The N9 over the Tizi n'Tichka is a paved mountain road with hairpins and mixed traffic. Give it more time than the map suggests and avoid driving it tired or after dark. In winter the pass can see snow and ice, and closures do happen, so check the weather and road conditions before you set off rather than assume it will be open. Fuel up before the climb, since stations thin out on the way up. Telouet is a possible detour. Morocco drives on the right, same as continental Europe.
From Ouarzazate: Aït Benhaddou, the Draa Valley, Dadès and Todra
From Ouarzazate, Aït Benhaddou is about 30 minutes away and Skoura about 45 minutes; the Dadès and Todra gorges are worth an overnight, and Zagora and Merzouga are longer drives.
Ouarzazate is the gateway to the desert and the Atlas, and a car is what makes the region open up. The Aït Benhaddou ksar, a UNESCO-listed fortified village, is about 30 minutes away and an easy first stop; the film studios and the Taourirt kasbah are in town itself. The Skoura palm grove is about 45 minutes. Heading east on the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, the Dadès Gorges are about 2.5 hours and the Todra Gorge about 3 hours, both worth an overnight rather than a rushed there-and-back. South through the Draa Valley, Zagora is about 3 hours, and the dunes at Merzouga are a longer haul, about 5 to 6 hours, best split over two days. If you are staying at a desert camp, ask the camp how the last stretch is reached, since it may be a transfer rather than a road for a rental car. All of these are estimates and traffic, roadworks or weather can add to them. In summer the heat is serious this far from the coast: carry water in the car and start early drives before the middle of the day.
Aït Benhaddou is a cluster of earthen houses inside defensive walls, not simply another kasbah to tick off from the driver's seat. Taourirt and the film studios make a different outing around Ouarzazate, while Skoura turns the trip towards palm groves and kasbahs.
