Getting to Tetouan: from Tangier airport or delivered

Tangier airport (TNG) and Tanger Med ferry port are two ways to reach Tetouan. Tetouan is about 60 km by road from central Tangier. There are two practical ways to get a car. Day trips: Martil, Chefchaouen, Oued Laou and Cabo Negro

A car is what turns Tetouan into a base for the whole Mediterranean north rather than just a stop on the way to Chefchaouen. Martil beach is close to Tetouan; Cabo Negro and M'diq are further along the coast. Heading east, the Oued Laou coast road runs along the cliffs, a slower and quieter drive than the inland route. Chefchaouen, the blue-painted town in the Rif, is about 60 km and about 1 h 15 away, on a winding mountain road that rewards taking it slowly. The Akchour waterfalls, inside Talassemtane National Park beyond Chefchaouen, require a further mountain drive, so they work better as an overnight than a single long day. Fnideq and the border with Ceuta are about 50 minutes north; taking a rental car across that border requires the supplier's written permission and valid insurance.

Driving and parking in Tetouan

The new town is a grid of one-way streets and steep hills, and traffic thickens around the medina gates and, in summer, along the coast road to Martil and M'diq as holidaymakers from across Morocco arrive for the beaches. Street parking is mostly watched by a gardien in a vest; pay the small fee when you leave rather than when you arrive, and don't leave bags or anything valuable visible on the seats. Once you leave the city for the Rif, the roads narrow and bend a great deal, share space with slow trucks, and can fog over in winter, so budget more time than the map distance suggests, especially after dark.
