From Fes or Er Rachidia, the road follows the Ziz valley down to Merzouga, and from there the dune tracks around Erg Chebbi are where a 4x4 actually gets used. Further south, the route from Ouarzazate down the Draa valley to Zagora and on to M'hamid is paved, but the last stretch to Erg Chigaga uses unpaved desert tracks; go with a local guide rather than alone, since the tracks braid and fade in places. Through the middle of the country, the Middle and High Atlas around Ifrane and the Azrou cedar forest, and the high plateau near Imilchil, are worth the detour in a capable car, though some of the passes up there close after snowfall in winter. Remote desert routes need current local guidance; do not use them without supplier permission and an experienced guide. Where you start shapes the route: pick up in Marrakech or Fes for the desert loop, take delivery in Ouarzazate if the south is your whole trip, or start in Agadir for the Anti-Atlas side.

Separate the road journey from the desert excursion. Reaching Merzouga or M'hamid and reaching a particular camp beyond them are different parts of the plan. The camp tells you where the self-drive portion ends and how any onward transfer works. That lets you compare a main-road rental with a separately arranged desert journey without assuming your rental must do both. Neither a destination name nor the drivetrain establishes permission to use the final track.

Describe the route and ask about the particular car's clearance, tyres, spare or repair kit and assistance arrangements. Do not assume that every version carries the same equipment. Follow up in the separate search and have the supplier identify the vehicle you would actually reserve.

Fes is a natural start for routes through Ifrane, Midelt and the Ziz valley to Merzouga, and for loops through the Middle Atlas. A country loop also needs a practical last day. If you start in Fes and finish in Marrakech, request that return when comparing offers rather than adding it after the route is booked. If delivery to Ouarzazate is the plan, name the accommodation and the collection time; the place name alone is not a hand-over agreement. Keep route permission, collection location and return location together in the confirmation. They answer different questions, even when they all concern the same rental.
