Getting to Essaouira: from Marrakech or Agadir

Most visitors fly into Marrakech and drive west to the coast: about 190 km, about two and a half to three hours on a single main road across the flat Haouz plain and then argan country, with a fuel and coffee stop around the halfway point. From Agadir the route runs up the coast instead, about 175 km and about three hours, passing Taghazout on the way, with more bends and sea views but a slower average speed. Either way, you have a choice: pick up the car at the airport and drive yourself, or arrive by bus or transfer and have the car delivered once you're in Essaouira. If you're weighing a taxi or shared transfer against renting, the real comparison isn't a fixed fare, it's a one-way transfer against a car you keep for the whole stay, which usually works out ahead once you plan to leave town at all.

Essaouira-Mogador airport (ESU)

Essaouira has its own small airport, about 15 km south-east of town, about 20 minutes by road, with a modest number of flights, some of them seasonal. Every car listed on this page can also be handed over at ESU: the supplier meets you at arrivals with the car itself rather than at a rental desk, so give your flight number when you book. Return works the same way, at the terminal before departure. The medina is walled and closed to cars, so a supplier can't pull up at a riad door. Give the exact riad name, ideally a map pin, and a phone number that takes WhatsApp; a riad porter with a cart usually carries bags in from the car park. Returning the car works the same way, in reverse. Parking in Essaouira

Day trips: Sidi Kaouki, Diabat, Moulay Bouzerktoun and the argan road

This is where a car earns its keep. South of town, Diabat village and its dunes are about ten minutes away, Cap Sim a little further, and Sidi Kaouki, a wide surf beach, about half an hour; keep going and Imsouane is roughly an hour and a half down the coast. North, Moulay Bouzerktoun, a kite-surfing spot with a lagoon, is about 25 minutes. Inland along the road toward Marrakech, argan oil cooperatives dot the countryside around Ounagha and Ghazoua, worth a stop if you haven't seen the trees and the presses before. Essaouira is windy for most of the year, good for kite and wind surfing but not always for lying on a beach in town, so plan calmer, more sheltered beach time south of the centre. All of these times are approximate and depend on traffic and the wind, which can slow the coast road noticeably.
